What is microsuction ear wax removal?
Microsuction is a modern, water-free way of removing ear wax. Using a small medical suction device and a microscope or magnifying loupe, our clinician views the ear canal directly and lifts the wax out gently, without flushing liquid into the ear.
Because everything is done under direct vision, microsuction is widely considered one of the safest options for clearing wax. It is suitable for most adults and is often recommended where ear irrigation is not advised, such as for people with a history of perforated eardrums or recurrent ear infections.
Who is it for?
Ear wax is normal and usually clears on its own. Sometimes it builds up and causes muffled hearing, earache, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), itchiness, or a blocked feeling. If wax is causing symptoms or stopping a hearing aid from fitting properly, removal may help.
Microsuction is a sensible choice if you have ever had ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, frequent infections, or if irrigation has not worked for you in the past.
This service is suitable if you:
- Have noticed reduced hearing or a blocked ear
- Wear a hearing aid that needs a clear ear canal
- Have a history of perforation or ear surgery
- Get recurrent ear infections or itchy ears
- Have tried drops or irrigation without success
- Want a quick, water-free appointment in Worksop
If you are not sure whether wax is the cause, our team will assess your ears first and only proceed if removal is appropriate.
What to expect at your appointment
We recommend softening the wax with olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops for three to five days before your appointment. This makes removal quicker and more comfortable, although it is not always essential.
At the clinic, our trained pharmacist or technician will check your ears with an otoscope, talk you through what they can see, and then carry out microsuction under magnification. You will hear a whooshing sound from the suction, but the procedure is usually painless. Most appointments take around twenty to thirty minutes for both ears, including the assessment and aftercare advice.
Risks and things to know
Microsuction is very safe when performed by a trained clinician, but no procedure is completely without risk. The suction can sound loud, and some people find it briefly uncomfortable or notice mild dizziness during the appointment. These sensations usually settle within minutes.
Occasionally, wax may be too hard or too deep to remove safely in one visit. If this happens, we will advise on softening drops and arrange a follow-up. We will not proceed if we have any concerns about the health of your ear, and we will refer you to your GP if needed.
Please tell us before we start if any of the following apply:
- Active ear infection
- Recent ear surgery
- Suspected eardrum perforation
- Severe ear pain
- Discharge from the ear
- Recent dizziness or vertigo
After your appointment
Most people leave with noticeably clearer hearing straight away. Your ears may feel slightly sensitive or a little echoey for the rest of the day, which is normal as the canal adjusts.
We will give you simple aftercare advice, including how to keep your ears dry for the next twenty-four hours and how to reduce future build-up. If symptoms such as muffled hearing, pain, or tinnitus continue after the wax has been cleared, please book to see your GP, as another cause may need investigating.
“I had been struggling to hear properly for weeks. The team explained everything clearly, the procedure was painless, and I could hear properly again by the time I walked out. A really easy experience.”
