What is a travel vaccine?

Travel vaccines protect you against infectious diseases that are more common in certain parts of the world. Depending on where you are going, how long you will stay, and what activities you plan, you may need protection against diseases such as hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, or polio. Our team will assess your travel plans and medical history to recommend the right vaccines for you. Some vaccines require a single dose, whilst others need a course of doses given over several weeks, so it is important to plan ahead.

Who is it for?

Travel vaccination is suitable for anyone planning to travel abroad. The vaccines you need depend on your destination, the length of your stay, the activities you will do, and your personal medical history.

You may benefit from travel vaccines if you are:

  • Travelling to Africa, Asia, South America, or other regions with endemic diseases
  • Planning a trip of any length to a higher-risk destination
  • Working or volunteering abroad
  • Visiting friends and family in countries where certain diseases are common
  • Unsure which vaccines you need for your destination
  • Due a routine booster (such as tetanus) before travelling

Speak to our team during your appointment to confirm which vaccines are right for you.

What to expect

When you book your travel vaccine appointment, tell us where you are travelling, when you are leaving, and how long you will be away. This helps us recommend the right vaccines and plan any courses that need multiple doses. At your appointment, our pharmacist will review your travel plans and medical history, including any allergies or current medicines. We will discuss which vaccines are recommended, what protection they offer, and any side effects you might experience. If you need a course of vaccines, we will schedule your follow-up appointments so you are fully protected before you travel. Most vaccines are given as an injection into the upper arm. The appointment usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Things to know

Some vaccines cannot be given if you have certain medical conditions or are taking specific medicines. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, tell us before your appointment so we can advise which vaccines are safe for you. Live vaccines (such as yellow fever) cannot be given within 28 days of another live vaccine, and some vaccines need to be spaced apart from other medicines. Our team will check all of this and plan your vaccination schedule accordingly.

Vaccines we cannot give if you have:

  • Severe allergies to vaccine ingredients
  • Weakened immune system (certain conditions or medicines)
  • Acute fever or serious illness
  • Pregnancy (live vaccines only)
  • Recent blood transfusion or immunoglobulin

After your appointment

Most people experience no side effects from travel vaccines. Some may notice mild redness, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site, or feel slightly tired or have a mild fever for a day or two. These effects are normal and usually settle within 48 hours. Keep a record of which vaccines you have had and when. We will provide you with a vaccination record card. If you need further doses as part of a course, we will send you a reminder to book your next appointment. If you develop an unusual reaction or have concerns after your vaccination, contact us or speak to your GP.
