What is hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver. It spreads through contaminated food or water, particularly in areas with poor sanitation. Most people recover fully within a few weeks, but the infection can cause severe illness in older adults and those with existing liver disease. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent hepatitis A and is recommended for anyone at risk of exposure.

Who is it for?

Our team recommends hepatitis A vaccination for a wide range of people. Whether you're planning to travel, work in healthcare, or simply want to protect yourself, we can assess your eligibility and advise whether the vaccine is right for you.

You may benefit from hepatitis A vaccination if you fall into one of these groups:

  • Travelling to countries where hepatitis A is common
  • Working in healthcare, social care, or food preparation
  • Living with someone who has hepatitis A
  • Have a chronic liver condition or HIV
  • Are a man who has sex with men
  • Use recreational drugs or live in close quarters
  • Want protection against a preventable infection

How the vaccine works

The hepatitis A vaccine is given as an injection, usually in the upper arm. It contains a weakened or inactivated form of the virus, which trains your immune system to recognise and fight the real virus if you're exposed to it. Most people need two doses spaced six to twelve months apart to build long-lasting immunity. Protection typically begins two to four weeks after the first dose, though full immunity requires the second dose.

What to expect at your appointment

Your appointment will take around 15 minutes. We'll start by checking your medical history and confirming you're eligible for the vaccine. Our pharmacist will answer any questions you have, then administer the injection. You can return to your normal activities straight away. We'll give you a record card showing the date of your vaccination and when you're due for your second dose.

After your vaccination

Most people experience no side effects at all. Some may notice mild soreness, redness, or slight swelling at the injection site, which usually settles within a day or two. A small number of people report mild fever or tiredness, which is a normal sign your immune system is responding. These effects are temporary and far less serious than hepatitis A itself. If you develop a severe allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat) within minutes of your vaccination, seek immediate medical attention. For any other concerns after your appointment, contact our pharmacy team or speak to your GP.
