What is the meningitis ACWY vaccine?

The meningitis ACWY vaccine protects against four strains of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W, and Y. These bacteria can cause meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning), both of which are serious infections that require urgent treatment. The vaccine works by training your immune system to recognise and fight these bacteria if you're exposed to them. A single injection provides protection that typically lasts for several years, though some people may need a booster dose later on depending on their age and circumstances.

Who is it for?

The meningitis ACWY vaccine is recommended for a range of people, from teenagers through to adults. It's particularly important if you're travelling to certain parts of the world, attending university, or working in healthcare or other high-risk settings.

You may benefit from this vaccine if you fall into one of these groups:

  • Teenagers and young adults (especially those aged 13 to 25)
  • Travellers to countries where meningococcal disease is common
  • University students, particularly those living in halls of residence
  • Healthcare workers and laboratory staff
  • People with certain medical conditions affecting immunity
  • Those who have never received a meningitis ACWY vaccine before

If you're unsure whether the vaccine is right for you, our team can discuss your individual circumstances during your appointment.

What to expect

Your appointment will take around 15 minutes. When you arrive, we'll check your medical history and ask about any allergies or previous reactions to vaccines. Our pharmacist will then administer the vaccine as a single injection, usually into the upper arm. You may feel a slight pinch and mild discomfort at the injection site, but the procedure is quick and straightforward. Most people experience no significant side effects, though some notice mild redness, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site for a day or two. Mild fever or tiredness can occasionally occur and typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours.

Things to know

The meningitis ACWY vaccine is safe and well-tolerated by most people. Serious side effects are very rare. If you have any concerns about the vaccine or your health, our team is happy to discuss them with you before your appointment.

Please let us know if any of the following apply to you:

  • Severe allergic reaction to vaccine components
  • Current acute illness or fever
  • Pregnancy (discuss with your GP first)
  • Recent receipt of another live vaccine

After your appointment

You can return to your normal activities immediately after your vaccination. If you experience any unusual symptoms in the days following your appointment, such as persistent fever, severe headache, or a rash, contact your GP or call NHS 111 for advice. Keep a record of your vaccination for your own health records and for travel purposes if needed. Your vaccination certificate will be provided at the time of your appointment.
